Registration with the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony

All medical doctors who hold a licence or provisional licence to practise medicine are compulsory members of the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony if they pursue their profession in the Free State of Saxony or – if they do not pursue their profession – have their main residence in Saxony. This is stipulated in the Saxon Act on Associations of Medical Professions (Sächsisches Heilberufekammergesetz). According to the registration regulations, you are obliged to register with the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony within one month after you start working as a medical doctor or – if you do not pursue your profession – after you register your main residence in the Free State of Saxony. The registration is performed by completing a registration form. Together with the registration form, an officially or notarially certified copy of the licence or provisional licence to practise medicine must be submitted, or the original of the licence must be presented. Officially or notarially certified copies of any further certificates, e.g. of academic degrees or titles, and of their German translations (in the case of foreign academic degrees or titles) must also be submitted, or the originals of those documents must be presented. If any documents of proof are still missing, you will be notified by the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony.

Doctor’s identification card

The State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony will issue a doctor’s identification card to you on request. One purpose of the identification card is to identify you as a doctor, e.g. to chemists; it is thus a permit to issue medical prescriptions. Thus, even doctors who are not permitted to practice as panel doctors – e.g. retired persons – may issue prescriptions to family members if they are paid privately or after prior agreement with the health insurance company. You can find the application form for the doctor’s identification card here. Details on the card’s validity and on the amount of the fees payable to the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony for issuing and sending the card can be found here.

Ombudsman’s Office of the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony

According to a decision of the 104th Congress of the German Medical Association in 2001 entitled “Overwork of Doctors and Exploitation of their Working Power”, all Medical Associations have appointed a representative who is available to doctors seeking help and who is bound to confidentiality. You can also contact the ombudsman’s office of the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony if problems occur during your further training.

Specialist’s Examination

If you have completed all periods and contents of your further training which are required under the Further Training Regulations, you can apply for admission to the Specialist’s Examination at the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony. Together with the application, you must provide proofs of your further training periods according to the requirements in the application.

If the proofs of your further training are complete, you will be admitted and invited to the examination. The Specialist’s Examination will be held before the examination commission of the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony.

Specialist’s Certificate

After you have passed your Specialist’s Examination, the State Chamber of Physicians of Saxony will award the Specialist’s Certificate to you. It is the confirmation that you have successfully completed your further training as a specialist.
